Full course description

About the course:
Let’s build an electric mine—a future sustainable mining operation! This course provides the fundamentals of how future mines will operate when all production equipment is electric. It is designed for anyone interested in understanding the basics of using Electric Vehicles (EVs) as primary production equipment in mines. The course covers the types of mining EVs currently available in the market, challenges related to their use, and efforts to replace diesel machines with electric ones as the primary production equipment. Additionally, it discusses fire risks associated with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and what the mining industry must do to establish EVs as the standard equipment, replacing diesel-powered machines.

Target audience:
This course is designed for undergraduate and graduate engineering students, as well as professionals and the general public who are interested in understanding the basics of using electric vehicles (EVs) as primary production equipment in mining operations.

Course content:
Introduction to mining Electric Vehicles (EVs): • How does an EV work. • Types of mining EVs that are available in the market. • Challenges in using BEVs in surface mines. Introduction to lithium-ion battery (LIB) and fire risks of mining BEVs: • What is a lithium-ion battery (LIB) and why does it pose fire risks? • LIB chemistries used in mining BEVs and their influence on fire risks. • Fire risks of mining BEVs, how to extinguish mining BEV fires quickly, fire risks on battery charging bays. What must mining industry do to make EVs as the standard mining production equipment: • What must be changed to make EVs as the standard mining production equipment?

How the course will be conducted:
This is a self-study course. The course is structured as follows: You need an internet connection and a computer, tablet or similar device to take part in the course. During the course, you will be able to take part in recorded lectures, videos, texts to read, and discussions.

To pass the course you need to:
At the end of the course, there will be a final test consisting of a number of questions that are connected to what you learned during the course. When you have gone through all parts of the course and passed the test, there is a certificate to print. You will find the certificate under completed courses. A description of how to find your certificate can be found at the end of the course.

Presentation of the teacher:
Dr. Adrianus “Adrian” Halim, Senior Lecturer in Mining and Rock Engineering, with over 25 years of experience as an academic and a site mining engineer in Indonesia, Australia, and the European Union (EU).
