An overview of the changes in 2nd generation of Eurocode 2
Self-paced
Instructor: Gabriel Sas
Full course description
About the course:
This course is a practical introduction to the second generation of Eurocode 2. It focuses on helping you understand why the code was updated, how EN 1992-1-1:2023 is organised, and how to find and use its rules in a clear, structured way. You will see how the main clauses and annexes fit together, where key topics are located, and what the new structure means for concrete design practice.

Target audience:
This course is for early-career civil and structural engineers, final-year students, teachers, and professionals who want a concise introduction to the second generation of Eurocode 2. Some familiarity with reinforced concrete design and basic structural analysis is helpful.
Prerequisite-knowledge:
No prior detailed knowledge of the new code is required.
Course content:
• Understand why the second generation of Eurocode 2 was developed and how the transition from the first generation is managed
• Navigate EN 1992-1-1:2023 and understand the role of the main clauses and annexes
• Locate key topics such as basis of design, materials, durability, structural analysis, ultimate limit states, serviceability, detailing, precast concrete, and plain concrete
• Recognise where bridge rules and other specialised topics, such as fatigue, assessment of existing structures, strengthening, recycled aggregate concrete, and FRP reinforcement, are located
• Build confidence in reading the new code and using it as a structured design document.
How the course will be conducted:
Self-study, online. You will work through short lectures, example videos, concise readings, and auto-graded quizzes. A stable internet connection and a computer or tablet are sufficient. The course is divided into 3 modules. The total study time is estimated at 4 to 5 hours. We recommend about 1.5 hours per week, depending on your pace.
To pass the course you need to:
Complete all modules and pass the final assessment based on the main concepts, code structure, and practical use of the second generation of Eurocode 2. Upon completion, a course certificate is available.
Presentation of the teachers:
Gabriel Sas, Professor of Structural Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. His work focuses on concrete structures, assessment and strengthening, life-cycle engineering, and sustainable structural design. He has extensive experience in research, teaching, and supervision in reinforced concrete structures, bridges, prestressing, and structural assessment.
