Full course description
About the course:
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Linear Finite Element Method (FEM), combining fundamental theory with practical application using Abaqus. You will learn how to model, analyze, and interpret engineering problems using FEM, progressing from basic concepts to realistic simulations involving element selection, meshing strategies, and contact interactions.
Course trailer:
Target audience:
This course is designed for civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineers, as well as graduate students and researchers, who want to develop a strong foundation in FEM and learn practical modeling techniques using Abaqus.
Prerequisite-knowledge:
To benefit fully from this course, you should have:
• Basic knowledge of mechanics (stress, strain, forces, deformation)
• Familiarity with engineering mathematics (basic algebra and equations)
• Some experience with engineering software tools is helpful but not required
No prior experience with FEM or Abaqus is required.
Course content:
The course is structured into 8 modules:
1. Module 1: General introduction and course overview
2. Module 2: Introduction to FEM
3. Module 3: FEM theory (stress, strain, formulations)
4. Module 4: Element types (1D, 2D, 3D)
5. Module 5: FEM using Abaqus (basic workflow)
6. Module 6: Element type and mesh strategies in Abaqus
7. Module 7: Interaction, constraints, and contact
8. Module 8: Summary and next steps .
How the course will be conducted:
This is an online, self-paced course that combines:
• Video lectures explaining key concepts
• Step-by-step modeling in Abaqus
• Exercises and practical examples
• Discussions for interaction and questions
• Quizzes to check understanding
You are encouraged to actively engage with the material and apply what you learn.
To pass the course you need to:
• Watch all module videos
• Complete the required quiz
• Participate in discussions
• Engage with exercises and practical examples
Successful completion demonstrates your understanding of FEM concepts and your ability to apply them.
Presentation of the teachers:
Chao Wang, Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. He has over ten years of experience in finite element modeling, engineering education, and focuses on bridging theory with practical applications in real-world problems.
